Larry N. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Smith has lived in the Gainesville, Alachua County area for over 25 years. He earned both his Undergraduate Degree in Microbiology (1978) and his Medical Degree (1985) from the University of Tennessee. He moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1985 where he attended and completed his Surgical Residency in Otolaryngology at the University Florida School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology in 1990. He is a member in good standing of The Board of Otolaryngology (Board Certified), The American College of Surgeons (Fellow), The Florida Medical Association and The Alachua County Medical Society. He is active in many national and state medical committees. Locally, Dr. Smith developed ACCENT Physician Specialists and was a founding Board Member of Millennium Bank. He spearheaded the design and building of the Millennium Center office building on Newberry Road. He is an author of two books, Darwin’s War: Science, Politics, Warfare, Faith and Sacrifice: The 416th Bomb Group’s Sacrifices to Defeat Eugenics (www.darwinswar.com) and America’s Healthcare: Thorough Ignorance, Bigotry, Poverty and Politics To America’s Uninsured; Medicine’s Long Journey (In editing, publication late 2011). He has published many articles on medical science, economics, politics and healthcare reform as well as publishing on aviation history. He is a co-founder and President of The Institute. He lives in Alachua County with his wife and three children.

Bruce Gordon

Mr. Bruce Gordon is a life long resident of Florida. Raised in an agricultural family in the Orange and Osceola counties in the central part of the state graduating from Boone High School in Orlando Florida. He came to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida in 1963. After a short period serving the federal government, he returned to Gainesville to continue his education. Mr. Gordon worked for several electronic and engineering companies around north central Florida before joining the Data Processing faculty at Santa Fe Community College. He was a founding member of the Data Processing program introducing the first terminal access systems to the school's IBM mainframe, and developing the first microcomputer lab for student instruction. During his tenure as a faculty member, Mr. Gordon developed a range of computer programming classes for both mainframe and microcomputers. These programming classes were grounded in professional programming experience from his application development work. Mr. Gordon currently enjoys serving Santa Fe College as the coordinator for the Career and Job Placement Department He is also active applying computer control algorithms used in various energy applications.

Remzey Samarrai, M.Ed.

Remzey Samarrai was born, raised, and educated in Florida - He attended the University of Florida where he received degrees in English and Educational Administration.  He is a member of Florida Blue Key and active with the Delta Upsilon Alumni Association. Remzey served for three terms as the Mayor of Micanopy, after which, he was appointed by President George W. Bush as Special Assistant for Nuclear Affairs to the U.S. State Department for five years in Washington, D.C..  Mr. Samarrai's personal interests include biking, historical studies, political affairs, and gardening.  He is currently affiliated with the Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus, The Institute, and various Republican Party projects and organizations. He also edits the BonfireJournal.com blog. He is sole proprietor of GreenScape Property Management, LLC, specializing in gas station/convenience stores and external vending equipment.

Alejandro O. Wyszkowski, B.A., M.MIS

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Alejandro came to the United States when he was ten years old. Desiring the right to vote, Alejandro applied for naturalization and became a proud US Citizen on June 14, 2006 (Flag Day). His degreed educational experiences include a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Cornell University and a Master’s Degree in Management of Information Systems from the Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Alejandro has played various roles in his career thus far. As an educator at Choate Rosemary Hall, he assumed multiple roles as teacher, coach, and dorm parent. After pursuing his MS degree, he was recruited by Ernst & Young, LLP, as an Information Systems Auditor and holds a non-active certification. An opportunity presented itself in Gainesville, FL, to join his family as a Managing Member and Operations Manager in real estate development, management, and sales. Alejandro has been an integral part of projects on rural subdivisions and commercial development in Newberry, High Springs, and Gilchrist County, FL, and holds state certifications as a building contractor and real estate sales associate. In addition, Alejandro is an adjunct professor at Santa Fe College where he teaches mathematics in the Academic Foundations department, and serves on an adjunct subcommittee. He served as board member of his homeowners’ association for seven years, with six of those years as president, and has participated as coach in the faith based Upward sports program. He lives in unincorporated Alachua County with his wife, two sons, and daughter, and has several other family members that are part of this community. Concerned with the direction of local and national politics, he welcomed the invitation to join The Institute and the opportunity to take part in creating an educated electorate.

C. Gary Moody, Esq.

Attorney C. Gary Moody was raised in a military family, and settled in Gainesville in the mid 50's. After serving in the U. S. Navy, Gary attended the University of Florida, where he earned a bachelors degree and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Law School in 1971.  Since 1971 he has practiced civil trial law in Gainesville, in both State and Federal courts, and is a partner in the Gainesville law firm of Moody, Salzman and Lash.  In 1972 Gary incorporated, and continues to operate, the Lambda Chi Alpha House Corporation at the University of Florida.  He was a founding member and twice past president of the Gainesville Charitable Foundation, and belongs to numerous Masonic organizations.  Gary has also contributed to our community by incorporating and serving  as general counsel to numerous clubs and other civic organizations in the Gainesville area, has taught adult education courses at Santa Fe College in marital law and automobile insurance law, and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Life South Community Blood Center for over 30 years.

Lisa Renshaw, B.A, A.S.

Lisa Renshaw has lived in the Gainesville area for 13 years. In 1998, she earned an A.A in Architecture from Hillsborough Community College and transferred to UF.  In 2000 she earned her BA in Political Science from the University of Florida with a focus on Political Behavior, Environmental Conservation, Smart Growth and Urban and Regional Development.   She later earned her A.S. degree in Graphic Design Technology in 2003 from Santa Fe College and founded Blu Dove Designs, a small advertising agency, in Gainesville, Fl.  Her varied background has given her a wealth of knowdledge to pull from for her clients and the community.  After 7 years, Blu Dove remains strong and is helping small businesses throughout Alachua County, surrounding communities and even outside of Florida succeed at building their dreams.  She continues to support the local community by providing internships for students from Santa Fe College and the University of Florida, as well as being an active member of the Gainesville Advertising Federation, Builders Association of North Centeral Florida and supporter of various clubs and other civic organizations.  She currently resides in Alachua County with her husband on their farm.

Keith Westbrook has been a Gainesville resident since 1991 after being transferred by his former employer Chrysler (1979-1998) field service engineering. He is also a USAF Vietnam veteran from 1971-1975 who served in Operation Linebacker in 1972 and 1973.  Keith completed a BSME from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1978, MS. Physic's in 1982 from UCSD. and a Ph.D. Physic's Alameda University in 2006.  In 2006, he became a Florida (215) licensed insurance agent and FINRA licensed (series 6 & 63) financial professional.  Keith worked for large broker/dealer before starting own independent agency Westbrook Insurance & Financial Services in 2009.  He is married with 2 adult daughters and a brand new granddaughter.  Keith currently serves as a board member with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Florida, Safe ID for Families and is a member of the National Coalition on the Aging.  He has served on several local planning and advisory boards including Cris Collinsworth Benefit Classic and the PACE golf tournament committee.   Keith maintains a Nationally syndicated political blog that is currently featured on multiple host sites and also a regular guest on several local and regional radio programs as an expert on the healthcare legislation.   I have a love of knowledge and my personal motto for many years has been "through education not through age does one acquire wisdom" William Penn.

Marin Smillov, Ph.D.

Marin Smillov has lived in the Gainesville community for over 20 years.  In 1989, Marin earned his BA degree in philosophy from the Sofia University, Bulgaria.  He earned his MA (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in philosophy from the University of Florida.   Marin Smillov has taught as a visiting faculty at the University of Central Florida and the University of North Florida.  He is currently a tenured faculty at the Department of Humanities and Foreign Languages at Santa Fe College.  Marin Smillov is a member of the American Philosophical Association and the Florida Philosophical Association.   He is currently residing in Gainesville with his wife and daughter.

Pearse Hayes

Mr. Pearse Hayes is a life long Floridian and has lived in Gainesville Florida since moving here to attend the University of Florida in 1984. In 1986, Mr. Hayes opened his private business, Hayes Jewelry Ltd. while attending the University of Florida and has successfully operated it for 25 years. His community involvement has included active participation as Chairman of the Alachua County Zoning Board of Adjustments and the Nature Centers Commission for the City of Gainesville. He is a member of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee for the University of Florida, a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator and the President of the Gainesville Gem and Mineral Society. He is a past member of the Alachua County Block Grant Advisory Board and the Unlicensed Practice of Law Board for the 8th Judicial Circuit. Pearse has a vested interest in this community and works hard to support its success.
